Crown & Bridge

Crown

This is a tooth-shaped dental restoration that is used to entirely cover a prepared tooth to strengthen it and restore its normal contour and function. Crowns may be necessary to restore fractured teeth or broken down old fillings. They are also used to restore the appearance of malformed, malpositioned and discoloured teeth.

Your dentist may also recommend a crown to:

  • Protect and strengthen a weakened tooth from fracturing.
  • Restore a broken tooth.
  • Cover a tooth which has had root canal treatment.
  • Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth remaining.

Bridges

These may be recommended if you are missing one or more teeth. When a tooth is lost through disease or trauma, the space that is left behind can have many adverse effects. The teeth adjacent to the space often tip or rotate, which can then make you more susceptible to decay or gum disease in these sites. Usually your bite will be badly affected by the missing teeth and can sometimes lead to temperomandibilar joint disorders.

Bridges span the space where the teeth are missing and attach to the natural teeth at each side.
